Let’s be honest – getting that perfect shot of your four-legged family member can be tricky! As a pet photographer at Kiefer Photography, I’ve seen it all: the zoomies, the shy pups, and yes, even the occasional diva cat. But with a little preparation, we can capture those magical moments that truly show your pet’s personality.
1. Tire Them Out (But Not Too Much!)
Exercise your pet about an hour before the session – a nice walk or play session works wonders. We want them to be relaxed but still have enough energy to be engaged. Think of it as taking the edge off rather than wearing them out completely. This helps prevent the infamous “zoomies” during our shoot!
2. Groom & Prep (But Keep It Natural)
Schedule grooming 2-3 days before the session, not the day of. This gives their coat time to settle naturally and helps your pet feel more comfortable. For our feline friends, a good brushing at home usually does the trick. Remember, we want your pet looking like themselves, just a bit more polished!
Don’t forget about their accessories – especially their collar! Think of it as your pet’s outfit for their big photo day. A worn-out, faded, or fraying collar can really detract from beautiful photos. Check that the collar is clean, vibrant in color, and free from any damage. If your pet wears ID tags, make sure they’re clean and not scratched or worn-looking. If the current collar has seen better days, consider investing in a new one for the session. After all, these photos will be lasting memories, and we want your fur baby looking their absolute best from nose to tail!
3. Pack Their Favorite Things
At Kiefer Photography, we know every pet has their weakness – whether it’s squeaky toys, special treats, or that one tennis ball they’re obsessed with. Bring these along! We’ll use them to capture genuine expressions and those adorable head tilts. Pro tip: Pack treats they don’t get every day to keep their interest peaked.
4. Health Check & Documentation
This one’s super important but often overlooked – make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date and bring along their vet records. At Kiefer Photography, we prioritize everyone’s safety, including other pets we might photograph that day. Plus, having this documentation handy gives everyone peace of mind.
5. Scout Your Space
One of the best things you can do before your session is to visit the photo location multiple times with your pet. Each visit helps them become more familiar with the sights, sounds, and smells of the area. Try visiting at different times of day – perhaps once in the morning and once in the evening. Take short walks, let them explore, and maybe even practice some basic commands there. The more comfortable they feel in the space, the more their true personality will shine through in photos. This extra preparation can make a huge difference in helping your pet feel relaxed and confident during their session!
6. Stay Calm, Patient & Positive
This might be your pet’s first time in front of a professional camera, and that’s okay! At Kiefer Photography, patience isn’t just a virtue – it’s our secret weapon for capturing those perfect shots. We understand that every pet moves at their own pace, and we’re more than happy to work with their timeline, not against it.
Remember, pets pick up on our energy, so staying calm and positive is crucial. If you’re stressed, they’ll sense it immediately. Trust us to guide you through the process – we’ve worked with countless pets, from the shyest wallflowers to the most energetic puppies, and we know exactly how to handle each personality type.
Sometimes your pet might need a break to sniff around, have some water, or just decompress. That’s perfectly normal and actually helps us get better photos in the long run! We’ve found that some of our most stunning shots come after a quick breather when your pet is feeling refreshed and ready to go again. Don’t worry if your furry friend needs multiple breaks or seems unsure at first – we’ll take things at their pace and make sure they’re comfortable every step of the way.
Remember, at Kiefer Photography, we’re pet people first and photographers second. We understand that every pet is unique, and we’ll work at their pace to create beautiful, lasting memories of your furry family member. Our experience with all kinds of personalities – from the super shy to the ultra-energetic – has taught us that patience, understanding, and a positive attitude are the keys to capturing those perfect shots.
